How to Watch American Netflix in Kenya

Kenya in east Africa is an amazing place to visit, full of wildlife, new ways of living and a heady mix of busy cities and empty wilderness. It’s a colorful place full of life, exotic sights and smells and more wildlife than you could name in a lifetime. Their TV leaves a bit to be desired though so I thought I would show you how to watch American Netflix in Kenya.

According to, the current Netflix catalog in the US stands at 4,052 movies and 1,580 TV shows. The Kenyan catalog has just 199 TV shows and 463 movies. That’s a shameful level of content for any country to have to contend with. Considering the subscription prices there are very close to those we pay in the States, I’m not sure that offers value for money. Another good reason to access American Netflix in Kenya.

Kenya and VPNs

Kenya has a fairly open internet with some controls. Those controls are mainly around trying to stop fake news and manipulation by the government and resulted in the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018. This doesn’t affect the standard citizen but authorities are increasingly looking to regulate elements of the internet and there is a lot of misinformation online in Kenya.

The country doesn’t seem to have anything against VPNs though so any American traveling there should be fine securing their internet traffic using one. Internet is only really available in certain areas of the country, with around a 26% penetration. Given the sheer scale of the place and how much of it is wilderness, it’s not surprising.

Using a VPN to watch American Netflix in Kenya

Using a VPN when traveling anywhere is essential. That is especially true if you plan to use open WiFi hotspots in airports, cafes or your hotel. Protecting your data in less secure countries is your sole responsibility and using a VPN is a cheap and very effective way of doing that. If it helps you access American TV as well, that’s just a bonus!

A VPN uses a client installed on your device to create an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server. All your internet traffic uses this tunnel while it is active and prevents anyone from seeing where you go and what you do. All the VPN clients I list use 256-bit encryption to secure your data, rendering it inaccessible to anyone who doesn’t have a supercomputer and several years of their life to crack it.

Your VPN client app will encrypt all your data and send it to a VPN server. That server will decrypt your data and send it out into the internet as normal. Selecting a US VPN server means all your traffic is given a US IP address so Netflix and other websites think you’re in the US and not in Kenya. That’s how you can watch American Netflix.

Here are some VPN providers worth checking out.

Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access is a top tier VPN provider that has a wide network of 3,321 VPN servers in 32 countries, including the US. It uses 256-bit encryption, has a simple app that connects or switches servers in seconds and works almost anywhere in the world. As it’s usually the cheapest VPN, it is well worth investigating.

NordVPN is widely recognized as one of the most secure VPN providers. It has invested heavily in its network and now has over 5,200 VPN servers in 60 countries making it one of the largest providers. It also uses 256-bit encryption, has a very user-friendly app, works to keep Netflix available and offers peace of mind wherever you travel.

ExpressVPN is one of the faster VPN options available in the market. It’s another company that has invested massively in its network of over 3,000 VPN servers in 94 countries. It uses 256-bit encryption, it’s app is easy to use and the network is easily fast enough for video streaming and more.

CyberGhost is also worth considering for watching American Netflix in Kenya. It has a large network of over 3,600 VPN servers in 60 countries, including dozens in the US. It also has a neat app that connects quickly, 256-bit encryption and is plenty fast enough for streaming from anywhere.

IPVanish has over 1,300 servers in over 75 locations across the world and is another solid option. It has a speedy network, intuitive app that connects quickly, many years of service behind it and the kind of apps and support you look for in a provider. It works to keep Netflix and other services available wherever in the world you might be.

If you want to watch American Netflix in Kenya or want to keep your web traffic secure, a VPN is the way to go. Try one, try them all but make sure you use at least one every time you connect!
